What we choose to put into our bodies each morning can really set the tone for that, and it begins with breakfast. Take a moment to nourish your gut, brain and immune health with expert-approved topping ideas you can mix and match to elevate and supercharge a standard bowl of porridge. We've got you covered with three quick and easy combinations that taste seriously good.

Sweet, warming or spicy: our experts’ top taste combinations

  • Turmeric, dates and honey (plus a pinch of black pepper and olive oil) - warm
  • Stewed apples, almonds and chia seeds - warm
  • Ginger, cinnamon, chopped nuts, blueberries and raw maple syrup - cool

The science behind each topping

  • Frozen blueberries: these delicious berries contain polyphenols to help boost immunity, plus they’re great brain food!
  • Cinnamon: this warming spice helps fight bad gut bacteria and stabilises your blood sugar
  • Ginger: grating fresh ginger into porridge gives a tasty kick, is great for your immune system and helps ease inflammation
  • Stewed apples: filled with vitamin C and potassium, plus when stewed apples release a special form of gut-healing fibre called pectin that can reduce inflammation and remove toxins
  • Ground almonds: keep you feeling fuller for longer and can help support mood and energy levels
